Work outside of Uni

Over my time in university I have also been working on many projects outside of the college.
I have worked on 3 music videos, one short film and some photography shoots.
I have been working on these projects as the gaffer mainly doing the lighting.
Once these projects are all complete I will post them up here
Only one of these projects has been complete thus far. Here is a link:

Polaroid map

With the polaroids that were taken the other day I couldnt really decide what to do with them. I then thought of the google map image that I used to give people while they walked around and I thought about the photo setting you get where if you hover over somewhere on the map a photo pops up of that location.

So with the polaroids that is how I have decided to display them, on an A1 print of the lane.

I have also gone back to the lane and recored sounds from the lane to loop whilst beside the map. While collecting sounds the lane had changed slightly as there is now loads of roadworks there.

The Polaroids

I gave 3 people a polaroid camera and asked them to walk down a small lane beside my house. I asked them to photograph 3 things they found interesting or thought would make a good photo along the way. The first row on the left were the photos I took and the other 3 rows were friends that I roped into helping.

Giving 3 people a camera and asking them to take 3 photos each was kinda risky because I had no control over what they took photos of. Some of their photographs I like. As I thought there were a few photographs of the phone box at the top of the lane and a photograph of a pile of leaves.

With the polaroid film, once the photograph had been taken you had to quickly put it into your pocket as the film is very sensitive to light. This made for some strange (but good) patterns appear on the photographs. The film also made for some of the photographs to look quite over exposed or out of focus.

More to come on this project over the next couple of days.

For the chance and observer project I have looked at the elements of chance in my own life. I quite often luckily find stuff like money etc whilst walking along a road. I came to the conclusion that the reason why I seem to find more things more often than others is that I am always observing everything whilst walking. Not in a day dream or just concentrating on getting from A to B, I tend to be looking about, searching, exploring.

I plan to set up a route through some streets and back allies around a block of houses and have people walk this small route one at a time. I plan to set up a few things along the route, something interesting, don’t know what yet but something that if you just walked along the route not paying attention to your surroundings you would not notice it. I will give each person doing the walk a polaroid camera and allow them to take 2 photos each of something they find interesting or that would make a good photograph along the way. They will each write what the photograph is and who took it on the polaroid and also mark on their map where they took the photographs.

There will be about 8/9 people taking part in this and once I have got all the photographs I plan to put them on display along with the maps to see all the different things people see along the walk. I think it will be interesting to see what some people see as interesting or worth stopping for and what others would simply just walk by or not notice.

Finding things on the ground

Heres a blog I found where people have been posting about stuff they have found on the ground while walking. It is interesting to see what others do with stuff they find and to see where their morals lie when it comes to finding money, wallets, phones etc.

Semester 2 project chance and the observer first half has been mainly focused on sound. The sound piece earlier on my blog was the first part of the project.

For the second part (our main piece) I had originally wanted to use two projectors, projecting landscapes into a corner. Also to have sounds of the surrounding for each place. There would be a set of buttons for the viewer to use which would randomly change the video projection and the sounds. Therefor giving the viewer sounds of different environments while being immersed in a different landscape.

To have a set of buttons set up to go between different sounds and images I would need to use an arduino board. As the project is due in 2 weeks, I will not have time to do this project this time around. Maybe next semester.

The next concept I have been thinking of to do with chance and the observer will probably be a video piece. I have been thinking of all the elements of chance in my life and the main thing I could think of is how often I manage to find money and interesting things while walking around. I guess this is because im always looking around while walking, always exploring. You wont find anything new or interesting if you are not looking.

So I thought to make a short scene about chance and finding things that most people usually would not notice. Most people walk along, obliviously, not really paying any attention to their surrounding. Right now that is the basis of my idea, nothing else right now. Ill update more when more comes to me.
